Have you ever thought about how powerful a single photograph can be? It can freeze a moment in time and bring a rush of emotions that transports you right back to that exact season of life. Now, picture capturing the raw, unfiltered experience of a family adjusting to bringing a brand-new life into their home. That’s what a documentary newborn session is all about. Bottling up the most fleeting time we experience as humans and preserving it forever. Each photograph serves that mission, telling the story through deeply meaningful and intentional images.
I’ve had the honor of documenting a lot of special seasons in my clients’ lives, but there’s something uniquely moving about bearing witness those new baby days. Everything transforms, the parents, the home, the family dynamics and rituals. Bottles, burp clothes, pacifiers, and basinets – a beautiful mess that represents that blip in time where our children are so tiny and vulnerable. Watching parents gaze at their tiny human with so much wonder amidst the exhaustion, siblings adjusting to the big changes, family and friends stopping by to nurture and support—these are the moments that deserve to live on forever.
During a documentary newborn session at home, my goal is to capture the family’s authentic story. No stiff poses, no uncomfortable outfits, and no forced smiles—just genuine, natural moments as they unfold. This season of life can be a blur (I know from personal experience!), so I focus on noticing the subtle, everyday details and documenting them both truthfully and artfully. I want parents to remember this fleeting chapter for exactly what it was, and one day, when they blink and their tiny newborn is suddenly a full-blown kid, they’ll have these photographs to remind them of all the love and hard work that brought them here.
This particular session, photographed back in January, was my second time visiting this family to document new life. I first met these wonderful parents when they were expecting their first baby, then returned when he was just a couple of weeks old to capture their new world together. It’s been such a gift to watch this family grow—and meeting baby sister with all her adorable rolls was, I mean… just look at them! Seeing how her arrival changed the whole household was truly amazing.
The grandparents flew in to care for Mom, cooking and prepping meals to nourish her during the fourth trimester—just as they did when her son was born. I love when extended family members are part of newborn sessions, and it was extra sweet to see how devoted they were to making sure their daughter felt supported and well cared for. It reminded me of just how much I needed my Mom after each of my sons were born, especially my first. I cried when she went by home to Minnesota that first time, wishing she could just stay forever.
As a documentary photographer, my goal is to preserve the real-life moments that weave together to form your family’s story. The laughter, the tears, the hard work, the beautiful chaos, and the boundless love—all of those emotions add depth and richness to your life. And what better way to remember them than through photographs that show things exactly how they really were? What if you set aside perfection, expectations, and the pressure to perform (especially during those first few months with a new baby)? What would you see when you look back at our session together?

We’ll absolutely still get those adorable details like baby’s hands, feet, rolls, and all the other tiny features you’re obsessed with. We’ll document your feeding journey, however that may look for your family. We’ll even get some family photos, but they won’t feel stressful. Ultimately my goal is simply for the photos we create together to truly represent YOUR FAMILY in a way that’s rich in detail and completely personal.
